Stop and block, then use as turn lane.

Observed by greengarious on Mon, May 05 2008

This Mercedes was stopped in the bike lane, with hazard lights on (so it's OK, really), then decided to use as a turn lane to turn onto 23rd.

I think that it's dangerous for cars to stop in a bike lane. However, as long as the streets are mixed us and the cars can physically come into the bike lane, they will. I'd prefer the car to come into the bike lane right before a turn rather than making a wider turn. This is because if they drive fast and they do the later, then I can not see them. Since I turn invisible when I climb onto my bike, they will not see me either. Collision.

This is not an optimal situation, but it's the best we have, IMHO.

If people use turn signals, then it wouldn't be a problem. The biggest problem is the whole layout. Bikes need a physically separate lane, at least partitioned by bollards. Jeez, that would be wonderful, just a little row of bollards. Ideally, the bike lanes would be in the middle of the road too. Otherwise, cars must yield to bikes, and like you say, we turn invisible as soon as we climb on a bike. I think the personal automotive age must come to an end, seriously.

greengarious, you're right that people should use turn signals. But follinge is right that the motorist did the turn properly (other than not signalling). The bike lane has a dashed line there; it's meant as a weave zone for cyclists and turning motorists. http://tinyurl.com/5wfq8o . I'm not disparaging your separate-lane idea, but you should know how to follow the law and use the roads as built. Because it'll be a while before we have what you describe. Quite a while.
