22nd and Lombard Streets -- Chronically Blocked

Observed by draughtsman on Wed, Aug 27 2008

I guess we won't see any violations written for parking here. Let's see:
1) it's a Bus Zone posted for No STOPPING let alone no parking,
2) it's posted as a Tow-Away Zone,
3) cars that insist on parking here block part of the travel lane,
4) it's a Bike Lane.
Philadelphia patrol car # 1715, for what it's worth.
The civilian car behind the cop has its hazard blinkers on, so that makes it ok right?

This is very common here. I think my favorite was an 18-wheeler parked in the left lane (delivering to the convenience store on the right in the photo), a van parked in the bike lane/right lane with its blinkers going, a buss that couldn't get through, and backed-up traffic honking behind the bus.

I bike by here every morning (between 7-8am) and there is always a delivery truck blocking the bike lane.

This block needs to be re-striped. Enforcing that bike lane, right in front of the 7-11, requires discipline far beyond Philadelphia's. One thing they could do is change the lane configuration from (parking, travel, travel, bike) to (travel, travel, bike, parking/stopping). There's no point in even wishing for enforcement of the current striping. It's untenable. Why didn't the original poster talk to the cop? Because he knew what he'd say. Sure I _wish_ they'd enforce it. I _wish_ I could climb like Alberto Contador. But what I actually did was to buy a bike with a small chainring. If you see what I mean.

@ amy - I ride here about the same time on weekdays. It pisses me off that cops and the crossing guards, who should be setting an example for the public, are the biggest offenders of parking in the bike lane here. Also, in front of Karma (coffee shop) is another hot spot for bike lane parkers. And forget riding to Trader Joe's on a Sunday morning. We could have a field day posting tags during church hours!

Cars blocking at this site are almost constant. Seems especially egregious that police car(s) park here for 7/11 daily during morning rush hours. Forget the bike lanes on weekends; they are used as parking lots. Sunday is worst; parking extends from Lombard to Locust. No enforcement.

South of south street, the painted lines are gone; pavement repairs have obliterated the lines.
